When Bill Fowler takes on a flooring project, he sees it through. And through. And through. As owner of William H. Fowler Floor Covering, Inc., Fowler is committed to making sure he personally inspects and approves every aspect of the job before it progresses.
And then theres his telephone. It doesnt stop ringing, but Fowler likes it that way. Fowler prides himself on being available to his clients. Questions, concerns, suggestions you name it, he makes a point of fielding it quickly and immediately. I dont have buffers, theres no one between me and customer and I like it that way, Fowler said.
Its that attention to detail and personalized customer service that Fowler says keeps him competitive in the Philadelphia and vicinity floor covering industry.
Fowler Floor Covering handles commercial and residential jobs for carpet, resilient and hardwood. A signatory contractor to INSTALL Local 1823, Fowlers manpower is staffed only by certified flooring installers of the local INSTALL program. His company is based out of a 2,300-square-foot show room in Rockledge, Pa.
By getting certified people on my projects, Im confident that the work will go in properly. Materials are getting more and more advanced, and the INSTALL program forces my installers to learn the upgrades on the installation end of the industry.
INSTALL, the International Standards and Training Alliance, is a career-long training, certification and marketing program offered to floor covering installers throughout the United States and Canada, which is based on the needs of todays flooring products. Dozens of major manufacturers such as Milliken, Shaw, Pergo, Mohawk, Armstrong and Mannington regularly have their technical experts review and revise the INSTALL curriculum to reflect what is needed on jobsites. Fowlers crews are trained by the Delaware Valleys affiliate of INSTALL.
The INSTALL apprenticeship program also appeals to Fowler. In the past, an apprentice was only as good as the guy who taught him, so a lot of times, bad habits were passed down. But now, we have trained professionals teaching the latest in installation techniques at a good training facility.
Fowler has trained people doing installations, trained people on the sales floor and trained people in the warehouse and office. His reasoning for keeping his staff trained reflects on his companys core values: attention to detail and personalized customer service.
That commitment starts at the top, with himself, Fowler says. I want the job to have my signature on it from start to finish. I want the customers to know that they have access to me at all times.
Fowlers crew was installing a large Forbo sheet goods job in the cafeteria and kitchen area at the facility. It was an expensive project, and when his phone rang at 5 a.m. on a recent hospital job, that customer got his personal attention as if it was a Noon-time call.
When you answer questions quickly and accurately, it makes the job run smoother. Questions dont fester overnight. Solutions are passed along, everyone stays in the loop, and customers remain happy, he says.
Fowler crews have worked on a variety of projects, spanning a host of industries. Just some of the projects completed include:
- Origlio Beverage
- Access the Curtis Building
- Temple University
- Einstein hospital
- Social Security Administration offices, Philadelphia
- Haverford College
- LaFayette Redeemer Nursing Home
- Stately Nursing Home Germantown
